Anglo American Platinum Waterval Smelter, located in Rustenburg, South Africa, is a renowned smelting plant that plays a critical role in processing precious platinum group metals (PGMs) extracted from the company's mines in the region. In 2022, the plant undertook a significant refurbishment project to upgrade its facilities and improve its operational efficiency, and I had the privilege of serving as the safety manager for a local company during this project. Our main focus was on the safe and successful replacement of the Granulator, a vital component in the smelting process.

The Granulator is a specialized device used in the smelting furnace to granulate molten slag, a byproduct of the smelting process, into small particles. The granulated slag is then used as a construction material or a raw material in cement production, making the granulation process an essential step in the overall smelting process. The upgrade of the Granulator was a complex and intricate task that required meticulous planning, coordination, and adherence to strict safety protocols to ensure the smooth execution of the project.
